Sybaritic Spa Products From Afar, Which You Can Enjoy At Home

Who knows when the hospitality industry will bounce back? By some estimates, it may take until 2024 for the industry to reach pre-2019 standards. That means that many spas and spa resorts may still be closed for awhile. In the meantime, here are some globetrotting spa goodies from around the world that I’ve discovered, which just might impart you with the same luxuries  — and similar enjoyment – that you’d find in a posh treatment room. I say, “Ah, spa!” Ready to bring it on and have some virtual beauty pamperings sourced around the planet? Just travel to – where else? – your bathroom — to find yourself transported (without the jet lag).

Important note: Some of the products I’ve listed here have a “compassionate component,” and a civic-marketing initiative to make the world a better and more beautiful place! Come aboard now for a super stay-cation – at home – that can, just possibly, mimic a spa visit at Canyon Ranch, Miraval and The Golden Door combined.

Complexion Perfection

Attila Koronczay, General Manager of Eminence Organic Skin Care from Hungary, told me all about this prestige brand, which I discovered years ago at a spa in Hawaii. One sniff and I was hooked; everything that Eminence Organic makes has a wonderful fragrance that is a real treat for your senses. Hungary, in fact, has been the center of bath and beauty culture for centuries. As one of the most northern stations of the Roman Empire in central Europe, Romans discovered the incredibly rich thermal water resources of Hungary and created an amazing root to a beauty culture that has spanned over centuries. Spas, facials and beauty preparations are still an essential part of the Hungarian lifestyle to this day. (Note: Yes, the famous Hungarian Gabor sisters probably loved spas!)

Combine that with a fortunate geographic location for growing crops, rich soil mineral content and a high number of sunny days, and Hungary will yield greatly nutritious crops that can help to produce fantastic beauty preparations based on plants, herbs and fruits. How can you not love that? Even better, Eminence Organics plants a tree for every product sold, with its Forests For The Future program, and is cruelty-free.

Currently the mangosteen collection is one of the product line’s bestsellers and the tangy sweet aroma is scent-sational.  Although it sounds similar to the mango, the mangosteen is not, in fact, related at all. The size of a small apple, the mangosteen is covered in a purple, leathery rind that protects the sweet, delectable white fruit inside. (I devoured  them daily when I was at a Six Senses Spa in Thailand.) When discovered in South East Asia by 19th-century European colonists, the mangosteen won its title of “The Queen Of Fruits” from Queen Victoria. Rumor has it that the Queen heard about this  precious fruit, which was a delicious mix of lychee, peach, strawberry and pineapple, and declared that she would grant a knighthood to anyone who brought her one. Mangosteens are antioxidant-rich and protect your skin from environmental damage. Whether you try the$42 Mangosteen Daily Resurfacing Cleanser, the $64 Gel Moisturizer, the $62 Daily Resurfacing Concentrate or the $34 Replenishing Hand Cream, the skin you’re in will be in for a treat. I’m juiced up about it, no doubt!

Dream Cream For Every Body

An Australian pioneer in product design and functionality, Bali Body was founded in 2014 by Laura Foley and her husband David Oosterloo when they were living in Bali. They use strictly raw and organic ingredients to naturally nourish skin. Bali Body is 100% natural, cruelty-free, gluten-free and vegan. It’s wildly successful —  Bali Body sells a product every 45 seconds, 365 days a year, and is tagged on Instagram every 10 minutes by one of its 1.2 million followers. It ships free in the U.S.

Bali Body Gradual Tan, $25.95, is a multitasking, hydrating body lotion that allows you to gradually build up color and customize the perfect tan for your skin tone.

The Luxe Tanning Mitt, $12.95, is a surprise bestseller that has sold  65,000 units this year alone. Taking its rightful place as the holy grail of tanning mitts, Bali Body sells one every nine minutes! The mitt ensures a streak-free and smooth application of your Bali Body Self Tanning Mousse, keeping your hands stain-free while providing a flawless tan every time.

Bali Body also makes peach, grape and watermelon SPF6 tanning oils that look divine!

Escape To An Enchanted Isle

Two of my top favorite scents are guava and passion fruit – and now they come together in an idyllic formula: Rahua Enchanted Island Ocean Mist. Rahua (pronounced “ra-wa”) is Rainforest Grown Beauty developed with natural, highly potent Amazon Rainforest ingredients.  Powered by pure, plant-derived nutrients hand-harvested by the indigenous people of the Amazon Rainforest through ancient ancestral ceremonial practices, this quick-absorbing lotion acts as a botanical climate shield offering protection for all skin types. So – let us bow our heads and let us spray!

The Galapagos-inspired ingredients of organic guava and passion fruit oils deliver the lush, transporting scent. New Enchanted Island Lotion Mist represents Rahua’s ongoing commitment to The Pink Flamingo Project, an environmental initiative that protects the environment of the graceful Flamingo birds of the Galapagos Islands. Rahua founders, Fabian Lliguin and Anna Ayers, were swept away by the mystery and magic of The Galapagos when they visited the beautiful islands on their honeymoon. Entranced by the beautiful but endangered flock of pink flamingos there, they created Enchanted Island Salt Spray in 2017 and committed a portion of its proceeds to The Pink Flamingo Project. The Enchanted Island Lotion Mist now furthers this commitment and Rahua is now cleaning more areas and protecting more precious Galapagos species including iguanas, penguins, sea lions and their nesting grounds.

Who knew you could do so much for the world, by simply applying something so wonderful to your skin? Full size is $38; $16 for the travel size.

Double Your Pleasure

Clarins, the luxury skincare line based in France, says that its Number One bestselling anti-aging serum is its Double Serum — two power-packed formulas in one. Formulated with  — oo la la! — 21 potent plant extracts—including age-defying turmeric—it can visibly firm, smooth and boost radiance in just a week. Mineral oil-free, the unique two-phase formula is inspired by the dual water-and-oil nature of the skin. The iconic dual-chamber houses the perfect ratio of water soluble (hydric) and oil soluble (lipidic) ingredients, similar to the skin’s hydrolipidic film.

Once dispensed, the two concentrates combine together into one powerful serum that easily absorbs into the skin and can target visible signs of skin aging.

It also contains youth-boosters of organic banana and organic oat, to visibly firm, lift, and fight fine lines and wrinkles. If you can’t get to the Clarins Spa in Paris right now, this is quite possibly the next-best-thing!

A worldwide bestseller, one Double Serum is sold every five seconds around the globe. Double Serum contains nine organic ingredients and three other ingredients that are Fair Trade-Certified. The company’s purchase of Banana, Ginger Lily and Leaf of Life even includes a contribution to help develop the local communities that harvest the plants. So you see? You’re doing good for the world by looking good. C’est si bon! Priced $89 for one ounce.

Furthermore, Clarins’ brand values are rooted in an ongoing dialogue with women and in abiding respect for both nature and people; it has commitments to sustainable sourcing, eco-design, and partnerships with Pur Projet – more than 440,000 trees planted and FEED — over 36 million school meals provided to children in need by the end of 2021. That’s civic marketing at its finest.

I’m (Coco) Nutty About It

Want the best locks of your life? Then try a little Coco and Eve Like A Virgin Hair Masque, $44.90.  Just slather it on after shampooing your crowning glory, wait 10 minutes, and then rinse out. Even in the shower, you can feel how soft and supple your hair becomes, no matter how much it’s been colored, bleached, or damaged.  (My stressed strands instantly turned to silk.)  Said a spokesperson of this Bali-based product: “Indonesia (of which Bali is home to) is the world’s largest coconut producer, and with so many health benefits, for the hair and skin, it was only right for us to use coconut as the main ingredient as well as other powerful Bali ingredients in our formulas.” With 16 Beauty Awards to its name, Coco and Eve products feature a signature raw virgin coconut and powerful tropical Balinese ingredients to create some of the most innovative products in the beauty sphere.

If that wasn’t enough, the company just introduced a new $39.90 Deep Clean Scalp Scrub , which is an exceptional exfoliating and soothing treatment to tackle dandruff and product build-up for really, really clean hair. And the ingredients are indigenous to Bali – they are infused with ash from Balinese Volcanoes to absorb excess oil, while skincare-grade AHAs and BHA, plus coconut shell, exfoliate and remove flakes. Finished with an infusion of pineapple and passionfruit to create a delicious scent, to transport you to a balmy jungle far away. All the products are vegan and cruelty-free, with no silicones, sulphates, toxins, parabens, or phthalates.  And right there, in the comforts of your own home – you’ve made the Best Tressed List.

Gotcha With Tatcha

Wouldn’t you love to follow in the footsteps of a Japanese geisha? Beauty icons for over 300 years, geisha adopted Japanese Wild Rose to create a refined, poreless canvas underneath their makeup. Tatcha Water Cream, $68, has harnessed this potent botanical to honor the original makeup lover. In traditional Eastern medicine, Japanese Wild Rose is used to bring the body back into balance, improve circulation and even calm the spirit. The antioxidant-rich fruits of this fragrant blossom can balance skin and diminish the look of pores.

Tatcha has also harnessed the special powers of the Japanese Leopard Lily to help reduce oil production, calm problem skin, and promote turnover of the skin. Hadasei-3TM, Tatcha’s trinity of anti-aging superfoods, features Uji green tea—prized throughout Japan as the purest, finest source of green tea. This powerful antioxidant-rich botanical from Kyoto is known to detoxify and prevent signs of premature aging. It also contains Okinawa Mozuku Algae—this sea treasure from Japan’s tropical islands is rich in polysaccharides, essential for skin is water retention and renewal, and Akita Rice—known as the finest in Japan for its superior taste and quality. It is also a nourishing moisturizer.

So there you have it — you’re a gorgeous globetrotter, no passport required.
