Liberal Twitter users are criticizing first lady Melania Trump’s redesign of the White House Rose Garden as “entirely devoid of color or joy.”
“Here is the colorful, happy Rose Garden under Obama, and here is Melania’s unveiling of the new garden, entirely devoid of color or joy,” author Jennifer Wright tweeted, accompanied by before and after photos.

“I’d say that overhauling your garden during a time of national unrest is a real Marie Antoinette move, but to my knowledge Marie Antoinette did not make the garden worse,” Wright added.

Jackie Kennedy’s Rose Garden was beautiful, full of color and life.
Melania Trump’s new dull as hell Rose Garden puts the “white” in “white supremacist.”

I don’t care what a rose garden looks like at a presidential palace.
I care that the Trumps decided the best use of funds was to renovate a presidential palace rose garden in the middle of a killer pandemic that led 57 million people to file for unemployment. pic.twitter.com/U01s2xbJHn

You destroyed our garden! How DARE you! Do you have no appreciation of history? Do you have no understanding of America, of what this gorgeous place MEANT?! Your tasteless, crass, white-power mindset is disgusting.
Get out of OUR house! It’s not yours to destroy!

Some on Twitter responded to photos comparing Melania Trump’s renovations to how it previously looked, saying they are comparing the vibrant flowers of spring to the flowers of late summer.
“First, you’re showing 2 completely different seasons! Spring vs summer. Second, perhaps the trees were diseased and they are replacing? What exactly is your point here??” one Twitter user wrote.

Others lauded the renovations, including Megyn Kelly, who described the garden as one with “understated elegance.”
“I think the new Rose Garden is beautiful. Understated elegance and a classy look. It will be amazing once it grows in a bit too. People need to calm down,” Kelly tweeted.

Trump revealed the renovations to the iconic garden this weekend after she announced plans to redecorate in July. It’s the first update to the iconic garden since the Kennedy administration.
“Excited to honor history & celebrate the future in our beautiful @WhiteHouse Rose Garden this evening. Thank you to all who helped renew this iconic & truly gorgeous space,” the first lady tweeted Saturday, accompanied by photos of the garden.
