Contractor jailed after allegedly cheating homeowner out of more than $1.5K

A Northampton Borough contractor is accused of taking more than $1,500 for a residential project and never performing the work.

Morris Richard Harrison, 27, of the 3400 block Franklin Square, is facing two counts theft charges in the scheme.

Washington Township, Northampton County police on May 7 received a theft report from the homeowner who reported hiring Harrison on April 28 to perform work on his back deck. The homeowner paid Harrison $1,680 and never heard back from the contractor or his company, Big Boulder Contracting Co.

The homeowner told investigators the initial check of $1,000 was cashed by Harrison on April 29 before he paid in full the additional $680.

Police made contact with Harrison on May 11. Harrison allegedly acknowledged his contract with the homeowner, telling investigators he would contact him by May 15 and refund the money if the homeowner wasn’t satisfied.

The homeowner then contacted police on May 16, reporting he never received any contact from Harrison. He also reached out on May 16 several times and left multiple voicemails, police said.

Harrison was arraigned on the charges this past Wednesday before District Judge Alicia Zito. Zito set bail at $20,000, which Harrison failed to pay. In lieu of bail, Harrison was taken to Northampton County Prison, where he remained Sunday.

The judge allowed 10% of $20,000 bail if Pretrial Services allowed it.
