Montclair Design Week has announced the lineup for its third annual celebration of design and community-building beginning this Friday, Oct. 16 through Sunday, Oct. 25.

The theme for MDW 2020 is “100% Montclair,” with panels, workshops, walking and biking tours, film screenings and culinary events, bookended by socially distanced outdoor opening and closing parties.

“MDW’s mission is to use the power of curiosity, innovation, and engagement to celebrate our community’s creative capacities, and to mobilize them into equitable outcomes,” said local architect Petia Morozov, founder of Design Shed, the design collective that fuels the festival. The nonprofit also sponsors community initiatives such as Pop! Goes the Plaza, pandemic business strategizing with the Business Improvement District and Shield Our Heroes, which made PPE for front line workers.

Due to the COVID pandemic, all events will be outdoors or broadcast on MDW’s radio channel, Radio Free Montclair.

This year, Montclair Design Week coincides with the Montclair Film Festival, which postponed its spring festival to October when the pandemic hit.

Many of MDW 2020 events are free or have a nominal charge, and several focus on themes of inclusion. Two Afrofuturist Zine workshops will help participants re-imagine the narratives of Black youth in a more inclusive Montclair.

Sister2Sister Teleport Machine, held outside Clerestory Fine Art on Church St., will reunite Montclair for one day with its sister city of Graz, Austria, named during World War II, when Montclair opened its doors to those fleeing Hitler.

Skateboarders will design and decorate new wooden “decks” at the Decked Out Workshop, co-sponsored by Shred Co. at the new Rand Park skateboard park.

Two foraging events, one in Nishuane Park and the other on Walnut Street, will be led by Iain Kerr, director of SPURSE, an ecological research and design collective and Montclair State University professor, and student Marcella Borgenicht.

Kerr will also lead the annual Toney’s Brook walk, which wends its way from Anderson and Edgemont Parks, through the Erwin Park neighborhood, to Walnut Street, under Lackawanna Plaza, to end at the Bay Street train station.

A radio show called, “Please Explain,” featuring journalist Scott Gurian of the “Far From Home” podcast and “Shark Tank” winner Krystal Persaud, will answer questions about Montclair that would likely stump most residents.

The Montclair-Newark Cycle-rama is a 25-mile socially-distanced bike ride in which participants will look for clues about the shared history of the two towns, which used to be one.

Morozov says she’s proud of her young organization and the “overwhelmingly positive” reception it has received.

“In a time when all community organizations are hard hit by this pandemic, we are so proud to have endured through the collective support of our community,” she said.
